Additional Information

An astonishing realization has recently gripped the Christian world: "Jesus Christ" was not a blond-haired, blue-eyed Gentile. Yeshua of Nazareth was raised in an observant Jewish family in a culture where the Torah (five books of Moses) was the National Constitution. Yeshua's teachings, which supposedly form the basis for Western Christianity, are now filtered through 2000 years of traditions born in ignorance of the land, language, and culture of the Bible. The issues over which Yeshua wrestled with the Pharisees are simply not understood by modern Christians; nor are his most important instructions followed by those who claim to be his disciples.

Former Pharisee, Nehemia Gordon, a Dead Sea Scrolls scholar and Semitic language expert, explores the ancient Hebrew text of the Gospel of Matthew from manuscripts long hidden away in the archives of Jewish scribes. Gordon's research reveals that the more "modern" Greek text of Matthew, from which the Western world's versions were translated, depicts "another Jesus" from the Yeshua portrayed in the ancient Hebrew version of Matthew. Gordon explains the life-and-death conflict Yeshua had with the Pharisees as they schemed to grab the reins of Judaism in the first century, and brings that conflict into perspective for both Jew and Christian alike.

This book is essential for all those who seek the authentic.

Nehemiah's exposition of Matthew 23:3 is excellent, and resolves a dilemma which must puzzle almost every believer who seriously considers the implications of this verse, and its contradiction with what Yeshua says in the rest of Chapter 23.

Through a number of examples he also shows the danger of straying from the written Torah, by either adding to it or taking away from it. That is what the oral law does, which is what defines Pharasaic rabbinism (as distinct from Karaism). Nehemiah shows concrete examples of its anti-Messianic implications, like those which frequently led to disagreements between the Pharisees and Yeshua. He also shows how the traditions of the rabbinists are so deeply embedded, that if Messiah was to appear today and disagree with them on some point, they believe they would have the authority to override Him. Extraordinary!

This is a scholarly and thoughtful work. It is, however and for the most part, about some relatively small but significant shades of meaning--of interest primarily to the Biblical community. Jesus' understanding of the meaning of the Seat of Moses doesn't surprise anyone who believes in His divinity. As a Catholic, I look upon the Rabbinical concerns over rules with a certain amount of exasperation. Casuistry seems to be some sort of universal spiritual disease or infection. I find, for example, the casuistry of the Jesuit Cajetan to be emblematic of theological nonsense everywhere. His question: "Is it sinful to gaze upon the private parts of animals?" is simply ridiculous from the point of view of common sense. Let's just say if that turns you on, you have a problem.

The author's apparent desire to relegate Jesus to some sort of commonly held reformism as later exemplified by the Karaites is intellectually retrograde. It is the same wooden- headedness that leads the... Read more
...and I listen to him all the time. I am sorry to say, I was disappointed with the book. There was very little new info, if anything,, that I hadn't heard him say elsewhere. I think the book covers a very important matter which every believer needs to know. I thought from the title he would have gone through at least the gospels and commented on several issues, not just one. A true comparison of the Hebrew Yeshua vs the Greek Jesus..I don't feel the book was true to the title. Sorry.
