This is a very informative book, although I wanted to know a lot more about Alexander Graham Bell. However, that being said, there was a lot of information I learned about Bell and his family I heretofore didn’t know. I laughed at the story about Bell teaching his Skye Terrier to “talk;” it is funny and was a milestone. I was surprised that his mother became profoundly deaf and he devised a means to talk with her, both privately and publicly. Bell did much more than invent the telephone, so I recommend reading this book to learn more.
This 1910 book is well written, full of interesting anecdotes, easy to read, well researched. So, why only three stars? Because it is not the "History of the telephone". It is the bigraphy of A. G. Bell. The author does his best to depict him as the sole inventor of it. He was not. He was one of the inventors and the one that made it commercially available, which was no mean feat. The International Telecommunication Union lists four precursors to Bell. The Smithsonian Institution lists eight most important inventors in the telephone field. Antonio Meucci (wikipedia) had a working phone line in his home years before the Philadelphia 1867 Exhibit. However, his industrial business went bankrupt, and he could neither pursue the idea nor keep his patents active. Did Bell do anything wrong? Not at all. He was one of the bona fide inventors of the phone. If he utilized, as it seems, the Meucci patents after they expired, there is nothing...
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book ! It's incredible to realize how much time and effort and pure innovation went into all of the different aspects of creating a working telephone. I've come away with a newfound appreciation for my telephone. One wonders what its inventors would make of the modern-day communication systems(cell phones, twitter, etc.). Highly recommended.
