Do you like chocolate? Do you know that moment, even before you put it in your mouth? You can imagine that taste. You can feel that rich sweetness on your tongue, the smoothness going around your mouth . . . The Holiday is a romantic comedy. You know what that means. And if you don't like romantic comedies, don't go and see it. If you do, you will know what to expect. The mushy feelings creeping up on you. All those 'If Only . . .' emotions telling you there is a lovely place somewhere in which people fall in love and everything works out kinda perfect. If only for a while . . . say, for the holiday period over Christmas and New Year . . . or for the 138 minutes which this film lasts. Two Women on the Verge of Emotional Breakdown do holiday house swap. They escape lovelorn predicaments and find 'unexpected' love on their opposite sides of the Atlantic. Cue picturesque English country house just the way Americans imagine it (with sheep out the back). Cue enormous L.A. mansion...
I am surprised that critics complained that the plot was predictable. Masters of plot such as Howard Hawks, John Ford, and Leo McCarey had you so involved in the characters, the scenes, and the ambience that you didn't even realize how seemless the story was until you had seen their films two or three times. Plots are not to be clever, Human relationships are to be engaging. In this film, you are completely caught up in the characters. We know that girls, who in this case have given up on themselves and love, meet boy; girl gets boy. The cliche of almost all classic comedies. How it takes place is what makes the film work. The Holiday works. I watched it twice and there are no squeaky wheels. Each character is drawn so well. It is visual captivating without no pretension. Eli Wallach plays the last of the great screenwriter from Hollywood's Golden Era. It is a hint that this movie harkens back to those wonderful movies that you can watch again and again. There's a neat...
The central theme of this movie is unrequited love and how four people learn to fall in love again. Nancy Meyers's film is impeccably crafted to deliver everything you expect in a holiday movie. The amazing cast gives heartwarming performances. As usual, Meyers's dialogue is at once witty and pithy. From the beginning scenes where Kate Winslet's emotion-filled character Iris discovers the love of her life (Jasper played by Rufus Sewell) is engaged to someone else and the Cameron Diaz character Amanda admits to live-in boyfriend (Edward Burns) of not being able to feel anything or to cry, you know their lives are destined to become intwined. When they decide to swap houses across the ocean at Christmas, the stage is set for chance encounters and romantic fun. From Beverly Hills, California to Surrey, England, the locations are perfect for holiday dreams. Gorgeous Jude Law shows up at the charming English cottage after Amanda arrives and the incomparable Jack Black finds Iris at her...
