Additional Information

America has enemies--ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.
But Will Robie may have just made the first--and last--mistake of his career . . .
THE INNOCENT
It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable. He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway-her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.
Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power.
Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life . . . and perhaps his own.

I really enjoy Baldacci, but not for the reasons you might think. I have read enough of his work to find the twists to be mildly predictable, but nevertheless fun when they happen. His superheroes, like Will Robie, are adequately human, they make mistakes, but I never get fearful for them, although I can develop some anxiety for the people around them. But the selections offered to describe the plot, the mood, the pace, and the characterizations don't come close to capturing any part of Baldacci's books. The plots are full of twists, but they really are about how the characters respond to the twists, the mood is dark plus suspenseful, plus thoughtful and no selection that makes you chose just one of those can capture the mood, the pace varies as any reflection of the real world would be, and finally the characters are developed, but complex on some levels and not on others. My point here is that in my review of the review tools, the tools come up lacking.

This is one of the few (good) novels that are fun to read from the very first page (first line, in fact). Usually, thrillers tend to have a slow, boring build-up and only get exciting anywhere from 10-30% into the book. I was apprehensive about The Innocent because of this missing build-up that all good novels have. But it didn't let me down at any point. It's also my first David Baldacci novel.

Although there was no build-up, it wasn't that exciting from the get go. The first 5 or 10% of the book had almost no dialogue. Will Robie, the protagonist doesn't speak for several chapters in the beginning. This made me feel uncomfortable and I was already getting tired of his character. But the book eventually transformed into a regular crime-thriller novel.

Robie was an interesting character, although not extremely likable. This was understandable because of his line of work. He is a highly trained government hit man who has been taught to keep information to himself... Read more
I just don't understand all of the 5 star reviews for this book. The plot was somewhat interesting but the dialogue and imagery are incredibly basic and predictable. I felt like I was reading the script of a crappy daytime TV drama for most of the book. And the main climax happens over a span of about 3 pages with little tension. Perhaps I'm spoiled by Stephen King's writing, but I just couldn't get past the hollow descriptions and predictable dialogue. I was glad when I was done with the book and won't continue the series.
