We are locked in the Insanity Wars. The world is not plagued by undead zombies, but by very much alive lunatics. They donâ€™t lurch around aimlessly. They busily make fake news, they laugh at experts, they ignore anyone with qualifications, they produce alternative facts and parallel realities. Madness is their trade, and theyâ€™re very good at it. Derangement is now the most profitable business in the world. If youâ€™re not demented, youâ€™re not trying hard enough. You need to get out more.

Modern culture is an Insanity Generator. Social media is relentlessly magnifying hysteria, faith, mysticism and irrationalism. No one could claim that the todayâ€™s world is straining every sinew to promote reason, logic, critical thinking, understanding and knowledge. Itâ€™s zealously doing the exact opposite. Knowledge is out, experts are out, logic is out. Theyâ€™re not profitable. They donâ€™t sell. Thereâ€™s no audience for them. Feeling rules everything. In the kingdom of the emotionally incontinent, the most incontinent of all is the king.

Who stands on the side of Sanity in the Insanity Wars? The whole problem is that there is no sane side able to take the field. The number of rational, logical people, capable of critical thinking, is tiny. They are drowned out by the stupid. They are overwhelmed, rendered invisible. Social media is killing them. Social media is an idiocy amplifier, a lunacy magnifier, a force multiplier of duncery.

The history of human evolution is the history of the different ways humanity has found to explore madness. Thereâ€™s still a long way to go, such a long way. Sanity is the last thing humanity will try â€¦ if it's still around to make the attempt. Survival is not compulsory. The unchecked rise of insanity is an extinction level event.
