Clint was surprised to find the Grand Master of the Masons masked. He wore a white hood over his head, which went with his white robes.
The room grew quiet. Off to one side, five men with guns came to attention, but the Grand Master waved them off â€“ for now.
â€œMr. Adams, youâ€™re a brave man to come walking in here,â€ the Master said, â€œbut also a foolish one. Any one of these men would kill you. All Iâ€™d have to do is give the word.â€
â€œThen give it,â€ Clint said, looking around the room, of which he had a panoramic view. He could see everyone. â€œThese men know my reputation, right? Donâ€™t they, Al?â€
â€œThey know youâ€™re the Gunsmith all right,â€ Al Fortune said.
â€œThen they know that Iâ€™ll kill the first man who produces a gun,â€ Clint said. He looked around the room, catching the eyes of as many men as he could. â€œCome on, who wants to die first for the Masons?â€

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

J.R. Roberts is otherwise known as Robert J. Randisi, an American author who writes in the detective and Western genres. He has authored more than 500 published books and has edited more than 30 anthologies of short stories. Booklist magazine said he "may be the last of the pulp writers." He co-founded and edited Mystery Scene magazine and co-founded the American Crime Writers League. He founded The Private Eye Writers of America in 1981, where he created the Shamus Award. To date he has written almost 400 books in The Gunsmith series alone.
