The Last Resort is indeed an amazing album, complete with 13 tracks of mesmerising and dark electronic music. The skillful production of Trentemoller creates an eerie and surreal landscape full of the coldest emotions one can experience. From the sinister The Very Last Resort to the melancholy Miss You, The Last Resort encompasses an ambiguous sensation of dark psychology and philosophy by disallowing vocals in any of the songs, with the exceptions of whispers and samples that further strengthen the unnerving quality of the album. Many have said that it resembles that of a film soundtrack, and in fact it does. Conjuring images of the cyberpunk city from Blade Runner, or the dreamy cinematography from The Big Combo its minimal and complex mysteries correspond greatly to the visual medium and such effect is enhanced by film noirs, surrelist and dark films.

The Last Resort is one of electronic music's greatest albums and is in fact my favourite album as well. For those who... Read more
I still remember when popular electronic music came out in the late 1960's to early 1970's with the masters Brain Eno, Larry Fast, & Klaus Schulze to name a few. There were also remakes of Classical music from Tomita to "Switch on Bach". Looking back the real Electronic Originals were from the modern classical composers such as Steve Reich or Stockhausen. I will not get into the Theremin, which is a whole other Topic. Later in the mid to late 1970's the German or North West European pop music took on its own form of repetitive dance music as for example Kraftwerk. There are too many Electronic artists to name & this review is not going to be a history lesson but I hear so many influences with Trentmoller. Take the added process of minimalist classical music, slow down the beat & style of Kraftwerk, add a lot of analog sound mixes, shake it up with a deep low bass line, & you will come close to what this CD is about. Some reviews write that the music is "Dark" but it isn't Gothic & I... Read more
I downloaded this on a whim and can't get over how much I'm enjoying this album. Although this album has it's roots in trance it's way more complex, introspective and moody (and way less predictable) than most trance albums. This album folds in a lot of ambient influences creating more of a "soundscape" than tracks with clear melodies. Although the album flirts with ambiance, deep primal rhythms tie the tracks together to keep it from disassociating into an ambient album. The moods range throughout incorporating different combinations of dark, fun, driving intensity, minimal breaks, introspection, and occasionally leads into (needed) moments of lightness and clarity. I would have paid the full album price for the first track alone. This is a true Album, play it from the beginning and enjoy the ride.
