Additional Information

Treasure hunters Peter Fallon and Evangeline Carrington are heading for adventure in Washington D.C., the sleek, modern, power-hungry capital of America...and the crowded, muddy, intrigue-filled nexus of the Civil War. Their prize? A document of incredible historical importance and incalculable value: Abraham Lincoln's diary.

What if Lincoln recorded his innermost thoughts as he moved toward the realization that he must free the slaves? And what if that diary slipped from his fingers in 1862? A recently discovered letter written by Lincoln suggests that the diary exists and is waiting to be found. Some want the diary for its enormous symbolic value to a nation that reveres Lincoln. Others believe it carries a dark truth about Lincoln's famous proclamation--a truth that could profoundly impact the fast-approaching elections and change the course of a nation. Peter and Evangeline must race against these determined adversaries to uncover a document that could shake the foundation of Lincoln's legacy.

From William Martin, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Constitution, The Lincoln Letter is a breathless chase across the Washington of today as well as a political thriller set in our besieged Civil War capital. It is a story of old animosities that still smolder, old philosophies that still contend, and a portrait of our greatest president as he passes from lawyer to leader in the struggle for a new birth of freedom.

We read to be entertained or to be informed. Once again, Mr. Martin has excelled in blending both purposes. Through his words, I felt as if I were transversing the mud-clogged streets of Washington DC during the Civil War years. Mr. Martin has the ability to not only educate us about American History, but to make us feel as if we are physically present to observe history. From the War Department building to the Smithsonian and Ford's Theater, I not only read, but felt that I was there.

The discovery of a mysterious letter written by President Lincoln on the day of his assassination provides evidence of the existence of a diary the President may have lost. The Lincoln Letter tells the story of two searches for the elusive diary, the first during the Civil War by the War Department Lieutenant who initially found it, then lost it, and a 21st century search by antiquarian, Peter Fallon. Both searches face obstacles and dangers due to political forces of the day which make... Read more
I'm the kind of reader who likes to learn something while I'm being entertained. I was hooked on William Martin's writing from the day I picked up Back Bay in an old Boston bookstore--Martin mastered the art of past-and-present stories before such novels were as popular as they are today. His latest adventure through history does not disappoint.

"On the last day of his life, Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter." Wow. That's a first line, and it only gets better. In The Lincoln Letter, Martin achieves something that's not easy to do: he recreates the Civil War period and creates modern-day scenes that are both equally intriguing. I no sooner finished one chapter and I had to dive into the next.

Fans of historical fiction will appreciate his attention to detail. What people drank, what they wore, how men looked at women, how folks got around--and what they thought, what they feared, what they hoped for. The Lincoln Letter is "classic Martin" in showing (not... Read more
William Martin delivers another historical thriller in his now and then style. The story paints a picture of the city and time that is at odds with themselves. It is not a biography, but more a glimpse into the souls and minds of the persons and nation that wrestled with the evils of slavery. For a biography, there is a mountain of books from which to choose. Lincoln Letters allows the reader to see the debate over slavery played out from both sides.

Martin brings to life the battlefields, the brutality and the losses suffered by both sides. Martin always educates when he writes. I grew up in Maryland, visited Antietam several times yet learned more about the bloodiest day in American history in a few chapters than in the days I spent there. I could almost smell the stench of death as the fields were searched for survivors.

The shock and horror felt as a young girl grew into a woman amongst the mangled bodies of war is a compelling story. The hospital... Read more
