The harrowing tale of the Ross Sea party, the other side of Shackleton's Endurance expedition

In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed south aboard the Endurance to make history by crossing the Antarctic continent. Shackleton's story is legend, but few know the heroic epic of the Ross Sea party, Shackleton's support group dispatched to the other side of the continent to build a lifeline of food and fuel depots to bear his crossing.

"I had not anticipated that the work would present any great difficulties," Shackleton wrote. Yet everything went tragically wrong when the Ross Sea ship, the Aurora, tore free of her moorings and disappeared in a gale, leaving ten men marooned with only the clothes on their backs and few provisions. With little hope of rescue from a world embroiled in World War I, the men decided to accomplish their mission against all odds.

Long overshadowed by the mission these men bargained their lives to sustain, this heartrending story of survival against all odds now gets its due in this definitive, surprising account of the last journey of the Heroic Age of polar exploration.

This account is both very accurate and thorough as well as compelling. The first part is somewhat slow since there are lot of details but the bulk of the story is captivating. I definitely found it difficult to stop thinking of the men out there suffering when I was in between listening. Even though there are quite of few details in the beginning I wouldn't have it any other way, since this is a historical account, not some hollywood hash, and the background, planning, and implications of the events are critical to appreciating the story as much as possible. I plan on lending it to those around me who appreciate history, exploration, and understanding the utmost (and beyond) of what human beings can endure.
Polar exploration is dear to my historical heart, and this book is written in a very easy readable style, giving a human face to the story of an inhuman environment. From an age when men were strong, determined, focussed and had a great sense of duty, this story is one of triumph over extreme hardship. Shackelton saved everyone from his ship, and never reached the land where this half of the party were laying the depots of food and supplies so that he could complete the crossing. Their story is amazing, and amazingly written. Marion
Very good story of courage bravery under the worst conditions possible
