Additional Information

Despite her dear friend Jane Austen's warning against teaching, Arabella Dempsey accepts a position at a girls' school in Bath, just before Christmas. She hardly imagines coming face-to-face with French aristocrats and international spies.

Reginald "Turnip" Fitzhugh-often mistaken for the elusive spy known as the Pink Carnation-has blundered into danger before. When Turnip and Arabella find their Christmas pudding yielding a cryptic message, they are launched on a Yuletide adventure. Will they find poinsettias-or peril?

Ive been a fan of the Pink Carnation series for over a year but never taken the time to write any reviews. **hangs head shamefully**. Lauren Willig writes with such intelligence, sophistication, wit and humor and Ive fallen in love with both her style and each and every character she has created thus far. THis latest installment met and exceeded all my expectations. Like a previous reviewer said, I, too, had never given much thought to Turnip's character but he fared wonderfully in his leading role in this novel :-) Deuced loveable, that vegetable is. :-)
I suddenly have the urge to re-read all the books in the series, starting from the beginning again, and relive all the great moments as i wait impatiently for the next Orchid book to be released! Bravo Ms. Willig! Keep up the incredible work!!!
Fans of Ms Willig will note the absence of Eloise and Colin in The Mischief of the Mistletoe. I didn't mind at all since there is still plenty to rave about here. It continues Ms Willig's winning combination of romance and espionage. Through a chance encounter, Turnip Fitzhugh and Arabella Dempsey find themselves embroiled not only in each others' lives, but also in a plot to save the nation's secrets from getting into the wrong hands.

But what makes this a winner in my book is Turnip himself, certainly a different kind of romantic lead. He is far from the dark and brooding type, he dresses outlandishly, and he unintentionally creates humorous situations for himself. His manner of speaking is also markedly different from other heroes in the Pink Carnation series. He is also a very learned man, but Ms Willig allows the readers to discover this for themselves, rather than have another character point out how clever he can be. I like that everyone else (except Arabella, of... Read more
I've enjoyed all of the Pink Carnation series, but thought I liked the contemporary sections best. This book has me loving the historical aspects!

I really didn't remember Turnip Fitzhugh as a character, just that he was a bit dim, and seemed to have a knack of turning up at convenient (or inconvenient) times.

Now the dimness is downright loveable- he's very sweet, even if the consequences of his actions aren't always obvious to him.

Arabella is a more traditional romance novel heroine- smart and of a good family, but poor, ready to make her own way in life. She doesn't have much patience for this foppish fellow with too much time on his hands.

The spy story was entertaining, fun edging towards silly, but it kept the plot moving along well. The secondary characters (those new to this book and those that carry over from the others) were fun to read. Jane Austen even has a bit part!

The strength of this book was the two main... Read more
