Sometime earlier I reviewed this CD, recommending it to enthusiasts to Augustin Barrios' guitar music who don't know Barrios' music that well. At that time I had not heard either John Williams' most recent all Barrios CD, "From the Jungles of Paraguay," and knew nothing of Berta Rojas except for having learned of her from another customer reviewer who lived in Paraguay.

David Russell's all Barrios CD remains a very fine CD, with his typical combination of outstanding technique married to a fine, intuitive way of highly musical, felt phrasing.

John Williams, with whom David Russell is compared when it comes to performances of Barrios' guitar music, may be more polished than Russell, yet there is a sameness about how he plays and phrases Barrios that ultimately disappoints. Williams' CD is very much a recording yet, for me , the sheer polish Williams displays isn't satisfying isn't satisfying in the end. To me David Russell's all Barrios CD is the better... Read more
A wonderful recording of unsurpassed music by a great guitarist! I particularly enjoyed the fluidity, clarity and precision of Russell's playing. Another plus: four of the pieces I haven't found on other recordings dedicated to Barrios --Vals de Primavera, Vals Tropical, Fabiniana, and A Mi Madre. So why only four stars (the same as the Williams disc)? It left me feeling "almost." Almost convincing; almost Paraguayan; almost right.
One advantage in living in Paraguay is being nearly immersed in Barrios' music. The guitar program recognized by the Ministry of Culture is top-heavy with Barrios from year three on, to the detriment of a balanced repertoire. Everyone plays Barrios all the time. My favorite Barrios CDs are by the two top Paraguayan guitarists: Berta Rojas, Intimate Barrios (Dorian Recordings), and Luz Maria Bobadilla, Homenaje a Agustin Barrios Mangore (Banco Union del Paraguay). Are Berta and Luz Maria as good as Williams and Russell? No. But they have grown... Read more
I first heard Russell's playing on "Best of Classical Guitar" in which he performed 3 Bach pieces, which I really like. However, I think Russell's performance of Barrios pales in comparison with John Williams' various recordings (e.g. "Latin American Guitar Music," "From the Jungles of Paraguay"). For example, Williams performs one of my favorite Barrios pieces, "Cueca," with much more zest and pulsating rythym (makes ya wanna get up and dance!). Also, I prefer the sound of Williams' guitar; Russell's guitar sounds too glassy in the high range. My only gripe with Williams' "From the Jungles of Paraguay" is the slightly excessive use of reverb. In fact, my favorite Barrios recordings come off of Williams' "Spirit of the Guitar." Although that CD includes only 3 Barrios pieces, both the performances and recording quality are really good. By the way, the first 10 or so pieces from that CD, including the ones from Barrios, are... Read more
