Additional Information

FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she's dreaded for years, the one that tells her the Poet has surfaced. She has never forgotten the serial killer who wove lines of poetry in his hideous crimes--and apparently he has not forgotten her.
Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call, too--from the widow of an old friend. Her husband's death seems natural, but his ties to the hunt for the Poet make Bosch dig deep. Arriving at a derelict spot in the California desert where the feds are unearthing bodies, Bosch joins forces with Rachel. Now the two are at odds with the FBI...and squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil, and into a darkness all his own...

When the widow of a friend (Terry McCaleb) calls Bosch to investigate her late husband's mysterious death, he is there.

Robert Backus: former FBI Behavioral Science, former mentor, former Poet. Is he back? All signs point in that direction, and Agent Rachel Walling is called out of exile in the badlands of North Dakota...but she is not given any power to actually investigate what appears to be his work.

Meanwhile, during the investigation of the death of McCaleb, Harry comes across cryptic noted and pictures of McCaleb's family without their knowledge. Was McCaleb being targeted? By who? Why? One of the pictures is taken in Nevada of a road sign, ZZyzx. Bosch decides to go and see what it leads to.
Walling and Bosch, both pretty much outsiders, he is former LAPD, retired, and she is not in good standing, They are paired because Agent Walling is already there and he has information. Are the two cases a combination of the work of one madman, or was... Read more
When it comes to reading series, I admit I am obsessive/compulsive. I read the books in the order of their publication and, if I find that I have accidentally read one out of order, I circle back and read the overlooked book(s) as soon as possible.

Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series is one of my favorites, but I hate it when he combines Harry with one of his other primary characters in books. I don't really mind Mickey, the Lincoln Lawyer, but I never liked Terry McCaleb. So, when it came time for me to read #10 in the Bosch series and I downloaded it to my Kindle and noticed the description of it as "Terry McCaleb #3" I groaned aloud and considered skipping it.

Then my OCD kicked in and I started to read. It didn't take long for my groan to become a chuckle. In the first few pages of the book, we find that Connelly has killed off Terry McCaleb. Nice move, Michael!

Terry had had a heart transplant and had to take medications to keep his body... Read more
In this often repugnant and frequently exasperating book, Harry manages to deal, at least superficially, with computers, by simply observing someone else and following the commands. Applied intelligence. He is also tenacious, he is audacious: intuitive intelligence. He took a course in hypnotism but he balks at reading books. Ah, the incontestable clue. Knowing he is left-handed, we confirm that he is dyslexic. And therefore he is spontaneous, calculating and imaginative, but easily angered, can turn arrogant or violent, especially when thwarted or frustrated, but he is essentially a good and decent man, sensitive, sensual. No doubt about it, Harry Bosch is dyslexic. But so little is known on the subject that even the professionals back away. They prefer not mentioning, certainly not dealing, with its mysteries and inroads, especially when every case is different. And "case" it is. An investigative challenge. Dyslexia is not an ailment, not a mental illness, it is... Read more
