The future of the Immortals is in the hands of an orphan
My greatest fear was that they would find us and make of us a sacrifice beneath a full moon. Now you, Thomas, must help us destroy the circle of evil.
The last words of a dying woman would change the life of young Thomas. Raised behind monastery walls, he knows nothing of his mysterious past or imminent destiny. But now, in the heart of medieval England, a darkness threatens to strangle truth. An ancient order tightens their ghostly grip on power, creating fear and exiling those who would oppose them. Thomas is determined fulfill his calling and bring light into the mysterious world of the Druids and leaves the monastery on an important quest.
Thomas quickly finds himself in unfamiliar territory, as he must put his faith in unusual companions—a cryptic knight, a child thief, and the beautiful, silent woman whom may not be all she seems.  From the solitary life of an orphan, Thomas now finds himself tangled in the roots of both comradery and suspicion.
Can he trust those who would join his battle…or will his fears force him to go on alone?

This is book is a marketing gimmick. Seriously, how many times can he repeat or should we say re-market the original book "Magnus?" This is at least the third effort since 1995. Why not create new material?

Don't get me wrong, Magnus was a good book, but seriously, Brouwer should fire his agent or at least the publisher for this. He is a good author but come on...
"My prayer was to watch you grow into a man and become one of us, one of the Immortals. You will help us destroy the circle of evil."

The oath Thomas gave his mother on her deathbed to one day understand and destroy the evil that forced them into exile now directs his life. Smart and handsome, but young and a bit naive, Thomas escapes from the monastery where he's spent his entire life to accomplish this purpose.

On his journey, he encounters several people who play significant roles in his life: William, an ex-Knight Templar, who becomes a grudging mentor; John, a percocious boy with surprisingly helpful pick-pocket skills; and two mysterious young women, the mute Isabelle and the scarred Katherine. One has captured Thomas' attraction; the other, his heart. Finally, an old man who keeps appearing and disappearing seems to know more about Thomas' purpose than he does, but what exactly does he want? As Thomas draws closer to the first stage in his plan--capture... Read more

I wanted to really like this book. It's medieval + magic + YA + young male character, everything that I've enjoyed from similar books in the past. However, I just couldn't get into it.

The plot confused me. Which is an odd thing to say, because the characters spend a lot of time talking about the plot, or thinking about the plot, or thinking about the role of the other characters in the plot. But in the end, none of these threads really came together. There was a lot of build-up for an emotional upheaval which, as it happened, neatly solved itself within a page. I can understand the purpose of slight misdirection and veiling of details in a book to keep the reader interested, but when the truth was revealed it felt hollow and/or nonsensical. I don't want to go into detail for risk of spoilers, but by the end I was left hanging, and not in a good way.

The characters were, in the end, a... Read more
