This book begins where basic trail guides and maps leave off. For each section of the trail, the authors describe the route in detail and recommend the best day hikes and short backpacks from each trailhead. They describe the plants and animals hikers will see, tell stories about local history, explain plate tectonics, and in a thousand other ways enrich your experience of the journey.
For many people, the Pacific Crest Trail is the ultimate long-distance hiking trail. Beginning in the dry valleys of southern California, it follows the crest of the snow-capped Sierras and ends in the ancient forests of Washington’s Cascades. Along the way, national treasures such as Yosemite, Crater Lake, and Mount Rainier make this trail one of the premier hiking destinations in the world. But hiking is about much more than getting from A to B. Berger and Smith draw on their tremendous experience—together they have logged more than 12,000 miles on the PCT—to give tested advice to long-distance hikers on trip planning, gear and safety, seasonal considerations, trailheads and resupplies, permits, and much more.

I LOVE this book because of the interesting historical and geological information. As someone who has always wanted to hike the entire PCT but more than likely won't...it's very helpful to have sections I can tackle, be it day hikes or multi-day through hikes that are right here in my home state of Washington. It is wonderful to know what kind of gear to need, the best months, what to expect regarding snow, etc. THANK YOU for writing this book. I will wear it out, I'm sure.
Having lived in the Eastern United States most of my life I wanted a PCT trail book to help with the planning of my PCT hike. This book was more than what I expected. It is carefully organized and includes information on the history of the trail and the regions, the flora and fauna, and tips and suggestions for resupply points.
If you are looking strictly for a lightweight trail data book than this isn't it. If you enjoy history, science, nature, and want suggestions on recommended resupply points than this is the book for you.
I purchased this book for my husband, as he begins planning his trip to the PCT. He loves it! The book has not only reaffirmed the data from the data book, but given further commentary on the environment, animals, and other key facts to be aware of throughout each section of the trail. I believe that the commentary included in this book helps to better envision the trip.
