The Parent’s Handbook for Talking WITH Your Teens about SOCIAL MEDIA

In seconds, parents can master the techniques and words for engaging their teens and pre-teens in the important must-have conversations about social media. Parental controls and filters last only so long with kids and before they know it parents NEED to be openly talking to their teens about social media, despite the embarrassing, worrisome, confrontational, or tricky topics that arise from social networking.

This book is a ‘how to’ parent’s handbook revealing simple secrets for talking confidently and comfortably with their teens The Parent’s Handbook for talking WITH Your Teens about SOCIAL MEDIA gives parents the words, the wisdom, and the effective communication tools for starting and continuing the essential conversations about their teens’ actions and activities on Facebook and other social networks.

Parents learn how to:

  • Talk with their teens about online privacy, safety, and other prickly subjects they’d prefer to ignore.
  • Collaborate with their young teens to get them off to a good social networking start, and team with their older teens who think there’s nothing new to know.
  • Be ready to troubleshoot social media red flags, cyber-bullies and “friends” who are strangers or potential predators
  • Discuss today’s more complicated version of the parenting advice “Don’t talk to strangers!”
  • Set social media rules and make networking agreements that stick.
  • Avoid parenting pitfalls to keep their friend status with their kids on Facebook.
  • Take the right action when their kids want to take a new social media step.
  • Stay in the loop with their teens who can be found by their social network with GPS precision, wherever they may be.
  • Coach their kids to think wisely, sorting out their social life issues in person instead of in text boxes.

Parents, feel your social media concerns melt away!

Ellen offers a no nonsense approach to managing the challenges of social media with our kids. I am the parent (and an educator no less!) of two young adults and wish that this kind of book had been available when my kids were much younger! In this book, Ellen offers realistic and practical tips for parents talking to their kids about social media. There are no fancy suggestions or unrealistic ideas, just the 'real deal' that every parent can relate to. Ellen frames very clearly the dangers lurking on the web, and offers creative solutions for involving kids in the decision making. This is half the battle;kids want to feel empowered and they need to feel like they're in control. Ellen's ideas will get you there. You will find clear examples in plain language to help you ensure your kids are safe online.
I think this book is a very timely and useful resource for parents. As an uncle and step parent, I have seen people close to me working through these issues related to children posting online. Its a very complicated issue and the author breaks it all down for parents. I learned things about Facebook security settings, of which I was not previously aware.

I think the best thing about this book is how it gives parents the words to say to their children, about issues that involve their safety, in a way that honors the child's autonomy and individuality.

I think this book would also make a great gift for people with children.
I am a grandmother with no experience on Facebook. I have no idea what my grandchildren are doing when glued to their computer screens. This book is clear and helpful in finding methods of communicating about a touchy subject with teens without feeling like you are infringing too much into their privacy. It offers ways to talk and learn about social networking with your children and grandchildren so that you can be proactive and educated without being intrusive and demanding. A well done book.
