How well do you ever really know the family next door?

Bucolic Newport Cove, where spontaneous block parties occur on balmy nights and all of the streets are named for flowers, is proud of its distinction of being named one the top twenty safest neighborhoods in the US. It’s also one of the most secret-filled.

Kellie Scott has just returned to work after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom. She’s adjusting to high heels, scrambling to cook dinner for her family after a day at the office—and soaking in the dangerous attention of a very handsome, very married male colleague. Kellie’s neighbor Susan Barrett begins every day with fresh resolutions: she won’t eat any carbs, she’ll go to bed at a reasonable hour, and she’ll stop stalking her ex-husband and his new girlfriend. Gigi Kennedy seems to have it all together—except her teenage daughter has turned into a hostile stranger and her husband is running for Congress, which means her old skeletons are in danger of being brought into the light.

Then a new family moves to this quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac. Tessa Campbell seems friendly enough to the other mothers, if a bit reserved. Then the neighbors notice that no one is ever invited to Tessa’s house. And soon, it becomes clear that Tessa is hiding the biggest secret of all.

I have no idea how readers can consider any of these characters "complex". Every single one was flat, predictable and unrealistic. No surprises, clearly defined as good or bad and tied up neatly before the story ends. I'm not sure what was more annoying, the poorly foreshadowed plot line around the new neighbors who murdered the pedophile on their last block or the bored housewife who went back to work and had a FLIRTATION with a co-worker that was nothing physical, no kissing, no sex, just one stupid dance at a club and her husband of 17 years is so angry he doesn't think they can survive it. The only interesting antagonist was the campaign manager but the author had to go and crap all over that with him, wait for it, flirting with the daughter to convince her to not be a moody little goth brat. They started down a path of him going through the house but decided rather than develop that let's toss in a random story line about a 80 year homophobe who disowned his son but... Read more
I really did look forward to reading this book. I love books that have a neighbours theme since you get to know what is happening across the street or next door to you. The book had potential but it just seemed to not pick up. There was no mystery/intrigue it had the potential to be a 10 but just ended up being a 5. Not sure if I would bother with her other books
This book is so horrible it's not worth reading to the end. It's preachy, whiny, heavy handed, judgmental, and intolerably one dimensional and trite. Who publishes this garbage? There will be a verified purchase next to my review because my husband purchased this for me along with another Pekkanen novel, but he knows now not to buy anything this shallow author writes again.

We get it. The author is a Democrat. She loves Planned Parenthood, hates Sara Palin, and stereotypes Republicans. Guess what? I don't care. I'm Canadian and have no interest in having some American writer shove her sappy sermons thinly disguised as fiction down my throat. Is this supposed to be a novel or a piece of propaganda? And doesn't the author realize that the housewife who murdered a pedophile wouldn't have had to do that if her political party hadn't gotten rid of capital punishment since the guy would have been put to death for his crimes?

And talk about overly dramatic nonsense... Read more
