FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE MEGA-HIT POST-APOCALYPTIC THRILLER "HOME"
What happens when a safe harbor isn't so safe? The Rockwells have survived the first leg of the journey home against the wake of a reality-bending disaster, but patriarch James is dying. His wife somehow finds help in a detour to rural Pennsylvania. While James recovers in a seemingly secure compound, the outside world is plotting violently against them and the well-prepared survivalists who've given them refuge. Set in the post-apocalyptic world of Steven Konkoly's best-selling Perseid Collapse series, REFUGE follows the same timeline of cataclysmic events from the perspective of new, meticulously hewn characters who fit seamlessly into Konkoly's work. It's a page-turning tumble into a dangerous rabbit-hole, where survival comes at a cost. REFUGE is a novella and is part two of The Pilgrimage Series.

James Rockwell and his family are trying to get back home after an EMP-like event hit across America. He almost drowned and is suffering infection from not only pneumonia but a nasty cut to his leg. His wife, Leigh, finds the only doctor in the rural Pennsylvania that is open. This doctor, a veterinarian, brings the Rockwell family to his compound so that James can rest while recovering. Dr. Steve Driggers and his family built a survivalist compound after the Jakarta Pandemic six years earlier. It seems ideal - a virtual fortress. But, will it stand a true test from outsiders with nothing to lose?
Abrahams second novella in The Perseid Collapse Series, Refuge, continues to follow the Rockwell family as they struggle to get home. In this new society of lawlessness and the mounting shortage of resources everything seems to be against them. This fast paced story brings new characters whose distinct personalities provide a good mix of perceptions.
I am really enjoying the entire collection of Perseid Collapse books. I have twice read through each author's different set of characters. I really enjoy the way they have managed to merge specific, life changing events from the original author into the timelines of the authors who came after. I find myself in a familiar scene, but looking at it from another point of view. Without giving away the plots, there is a situation that arises in the story line of the 1st author and creator of the series, Steven Konkoly. His characters are rescuers, stopping the bad guys. In the Abrahams' books, these characters are the victims, which we know from author 1 have been rescued. What is not answered in author 1's perspective, is answered by author 2. Other little, but amusing, things pop up between the three authors. The last name of the main character of book one is now the name of the street the characters of book 2 live on. I highly recommend these books to anyone who enjoys SHTF fiction!
I liked Part 1, and Part 2 was just as good. I like the way Abrahams made the action precise. At each point, it was clear what was happening. Combat was swiftly described. He didn't waste much time, particularly toward the end. He may have been in a hurry to finish, or it may be a style choice that he likes to write his action pretty clipped. Either way, it worked for me.
Abrahams keeps the mystery around the event that brought about the crisis, but his characters speculate some on the cause. It's interesting. If you've read Chapter 1 of Konkoly's The Perseid Collapse, you have an idea what is going on. The confusion Abrahams continues from Konkoly's novels keeps it realistic and adventurous.
Abrahams leaves out a lot of gun enthusiast speak. That's fine with me, but some others might want to know exactly what types of weapons are in use. This is a much simpler and shorter read than a full-length novel.
