This book, though written over one hundred years ago, provides a remarkably penetrating view of modern Evangelical Protestantism and its relationship to the history of the Christian Faith. Far too many modern believers seem to think that they are somehow disconnected from the historical Church. This book is a needed cure to that error.

If the Church is to recover her vigor and influence; if she is to attain to the glorious unity for which the Lord Jesus prayed (John 17); She must remember the lessons that Philip Schaff sets forth in this work. I recommend it to all serious Christians, whether Protestant or otherwise.
I come not to bury Schaff but to praise him. Such should be the mindset of those Christians who disagree with the Mercersberg Theology. It it represents a particularly fine analysis of European and American Protestantism up to the 19th century. The Papacy and the medieval church are considered positive even for his own day even as the Catholic Church civilized the barbarous tribes of Europe while providing a form of stability in his own day for nations such as Ireland, Spain and Italy. The Reformation, unsurprisingly, appeared first on German soil given the German temperament, its love of freedom and its inquisitive, almost childlike nature. (Such ideas and pronouncements clearly violate modern sensibilities, but indicate typical forms of thought in the early Victorian age.) Schaff also possesses the Whig view of history... Read more
