Additional Information

For a long time, Christians have tried to bridge the divide between Christianity and secular liberalism with philosophizing and theologizing. In The Priority of Christ, Father Robert Barron shows that the answer to this debateand the way to move forwardlies in Jesus. Barron transcends the usual liberal/conservative or Protestant/Catholic divides with a postliberal Catholicism that brings the focus back on Jesus as revealed in the New Testament narratives. Barron's classical Catholic postliberalism will be of interest to a broad audience including not only the academic community but also preachers and general readers interested in entering the dialogue between Catholicism and postliberalism.

I found Barron's approach extremely refreshing. Having waded through modern philosophy and much contemporary theology, I found Barron's ideas penetrating and profound. Instead of attempting a false "neutrality," he stands clearly in the faith perspective of the Church and tackles the modern dilemma that "modernity" has handed the modern-day believer. He shows how a correct understanding of Aquinas and Scripture lend themselves to what he terms a "post-modern" Catholic view of reality. The book develops many of the insights of modern hermeneutics and avoids returning to the over-emphasis on rationalistic foundationalism found in theology during the enlightenment and post-enlightenment periods. He is not afraid to find agreement in modern thinkers, and is nuanced in his disagreement. He diagnoses the problems, show how Christ offers a solution, and then deals with the implications of the perspective offered through the lens of Thomistic thought. While some may attempt to dismiss this... Read more
This is not a book for the ordinary layman desiring merely a popular or literary appreciation of Jesus; it is a book aimed at university professors and professional philosophers. And it doesn't help the layman that Father chooses for his section and chapter headings and general vocabulary such technical words as epistemic, coinherence, foundationalism, deontologism, and proportionalism. It's a book by a professional theologian-philosopher for his colleagues.
When Father Barron wishes to, he can write brilliant analyses of certain scenes from the New Testament; scenes such as The Wedding at Cana, The Parable of the Prodigal Son, The Woman at the Well, The Road to Emmaus, or The Appearance to the Eleven. And many of his individual observations about Jesus are apt and revealing: Jesus, for example, is described as feisty and prickly, unusual but insightful words; also, as a believer in Christ the reader is advised, "your life is not about you." Such a profound truism pops up in an... Read more
If you know Fr. Barron from his blogs, podcasts and the "Word on Fire" Catholicism series, then this book is something that will take you a little deeper into the subjects he covers there. It's not an "easy read." Unlike in his more popular works, here Fr. Barron favors academic rigor and detail. He dives into the deep end of challenging debates both within the Catholic Church and between believers and non-believers. But if you go into those depths with him, you come out with a far richer understanding of Jesus and Catholicism.
