"Colorful and relevant..." -Slate

From the creator of the New York Times bestselling series SAGA, comes the three-time, Eisner nominated, PanelSyndicate.com's digital comics sensation THE PRIVATE EYE! Finally, this book is coming to print in a beautiful deluxe hardcover edition!

Set in an inevitable future of where everyone has a secret identity, THE PRIVATE EYE is an eerily prescient sci-fi mystery about an unlicensed private investigator who stumbles onto the most important case of his life.

The series is set in 2076, a time after "the cloud has burst", revealing everyone's secrets. As a result, there is no more Internet, and people are excessively guarded about their identity, to the point of appearing only masked in public.

"Readers and retailers have been begging us for a physical version of this story ever since we first announced our hard-boiled parable about the future of privacy in America, so when the time came, Marcos and I knew that we had to go with Image Comics, the most creator-friendly publisher of print comics ever." -Brian K. Vaughan

Leave it to Brian K. Vaughan to write a story about a future world without the Internet and then post it exclusively on the Internet. Well now at last this Future Film Noir Masterpiece can be enjoyed by Luddites like myself as well as electronic readers who just want a hard copy.

This Hardcover is 300 pages in the Landscape format (Wider then Tall) with beautiful slick paper and a healthy dose of sketches and behind the scenes back matter.

Brian K. Vaughan for those unfamiliar is one of the best writers of comics our field has ever created. He spent some time in Hollywood working on television shows like Lost and Under The Dome, but has for now returned to writing comics full time. His Image Comic Saga is on the top of everyone's Best List.

The premise of this graphic novel is fascinating. It explores a world which has suffered a "cloud burst." All information on the internet is released, including people's web histories, emails, search histories, etc. Relationships are destroyed, scandals ensue, and all of this results in a society that both prizes privacy above all else and does away with the internet. In fact, people go about their daily lives wearing masks when in public because of their value for privacy. This gives the artist ample opportunity to create wonderfully imaginative and rich visuals to populate the city that the story's protagonist runs around.

Aside from the fascinating world in which the story is set, "Private Eye" is essentially a P.I. story, in which the protagonist is hired to uncover the secrets and identities of people for those willing to pay. This all connects satisfyingly to the discarded internet in and interesting turn of events.

Ok caveat to me this is one of the lesser Brian K Vaughn works. However I am still giving it 5 starts because on a bad day Vaughn is still one of the best comic writers working. The story follow a Private Eye in the future where privacy and anonymity are closely guarded and dissemination of personal information is forbidden. The world building in the story is clever with the internet being a "fad" and everyone having secret identities. However where the story excels are the characters. Vaughn like most great writers builds intense and three dimensional characters that you feel like can walk off the page. In fact the only reason I posit it is a lesser Vaughn work is that the characters in this are slightly less developed than his other books. However that said most writers can't come close to Vaughn in this way, basically it's like a great Basketball player scoring two points instead of three.

This brings us to the art. While the story is great the art exceeds it by... Read more
