Let me start out with the fact that I LOVE Kiera Cass's books. It's a rarity that I can even put them down in most cases and this novella was no exception!
My favorite part was most likely the fact that Cass didn't make Clarkson and Amberly's relationship completely parallel to Maxon and America's. An example being (warning: slight spoiler) that while America's concern for being queen holds her back from her feelings for Maxon, Amberly has confidence in her abilities and is prepared to take on the role.It always at least slightly irritating when you feel like you're reading the exact same story with a new name. Clarkson and Amberly have their own lives and opinions and secrets, which adds to the story and really gives more of an insight into the two of them than we see in the trilogy, no matter the length.
Also, it was such a relief that Kiera didn't completely change Clarkson's personality from the series just to make him more likable. Now you get a small...
This novella is a prequel to The Selection, it is Maxon mother's story; Queen Amberly, her selection story. I really, really enjoyed reading this novella, I already loved Amberly, she was so sweet to America and all the girls during her son's selection time. Now, Clarkson...well, well...I hate King Clarkson during The Selection; I thought of him to be manipulative, cruel and someone that couldn't love anyone. But he is so not like this in this novella, I am not even sure how I should feel about it, I love the young Clarkson but hate the older one. Does that make any sense? Am I the only one with this mixed feeling?
I did like to see how both of them got close and he picked Amberly because he truly loved her, even knowing something that could have prevented that marriage (you will have to read the book to find that out). You got to see a good side of Clarkson, but I felt that even though he was nice with Amberly, the still had that manipulative way of his.
I loved The Selection, but I was frustrated when reading The Queen. Amberly is spineless and obeys her husband blindly. I never saw her true personality. The concept of infertility was introduced, but it was never explained how she got her son. Definitely read The Selection, but skip this novella.
