We read this together as part of our homeschool high school history curriculum and actually found it very interesting. I've studied WWI history for years, but of course most of it has been from the Allied point of view -- Remarque, trench warfare, Wilson's forgien policy, etc. It was great to get a glimpse from the lens of this young enthusiastic German hero. Learning about the development of aviation military history was fascinating. Who would have thought that the enemy recon pilots would have begun the war waving at each other as they passed in the air to spy on each other? Reading about the honor and respect they paid to a fallen enemy pilot shows a different attitude than one would have expected under the circumstances. They were after the plane, not necessarily the pilot. We are definitely going to expand our studies more after reading this book.
The best of the best. He was not the best pilot, but he had incredibly good aim. As a youngster, he was called "Hawk's Eyes" and "Eagle Eyes". Although credited with 80 kills, he may have shot down well over 100 planes. His death is very controversial. Officially, a Canadian pilot named Captain Brown is given the credit; however a crew of Australian ground gunners were supposedly the actual people who shot him down. They said he made a perfect 3 point landing, and was found cold dead, with the stick in his hand immediately after he landed. Very creepy...
Very insightful book and well written. You get a pretty clear picture of Manfred Von Richthofen's short life, how he saw the war and his place in it. He had quite a sense of humor also. Kind of sad though when you realize he was bred for war. Interesting that his fighting tactics he learned from Boelcke are still used by fighter pilots today. Good introduction that gives alot of historical information on the war and the aces. I didn't know alot about WW1 when I got this book but I've certainly become interested enough to read alot more about it.
