Additional Information

Marko Kunich is a teenager in a small, fishing village. Little does he know that his life is about to change.

The Empire is at war. The forces of Emperor Rau are struggling against the forces of the King Kastav. Just when it appears that the Empire is getting the upper hand, a new threat emerges from the Kingdom. The Imperial Mage, once thought of as the perfect soldier, is up against a new threat: Royal Priests. These priests are infiltrating and decimating the Imperial forces, seemingly at will.

Marko is thrown into the war. He finds himself caught up in the intrigue, politics and violence of this desperate battle. How can a mere child survive in this world? Marko discovers a latent talent that few possess. He has magic! But is there enough time for him to learn it in order to survive and protect his friends?

Ok, after some of the poor reviews I was somewhat reluctant to purchase this book. I am very glad I did. This book made me feel better after reading it than I felt before doing so. I liked and could relate to the main character. No one cheated on him, his love interest wasn't raped and the book ended well with relation to the next stage of his growth. The book does not have the depth like many of the other fantasy novels out there but was not shallow either. A happy medium. The ONLY thing I did not like about this book was that it ended. A very pleasant read. Thanks.
By the way you may need a web page to keep your fans informed about book two!
I was very glad to have read this book. It was a fun way to pass an evening. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. That said...

1) The author can't seem to decide what age the main character is in the terms of his society. At one point he is this 'child' who is 'too young' to be inducted, but at other points he is a 'man' who then goes on to join the army and do well.
2) The 'orphanage' should be an 'academy' to fit the story better.
3) The plot tension was very weak, making this book more a series of mini-stories without a good overarching theme.
4) The story was a bit lighter, and definitely shorter, than I would have liked.
Well written, progressively positive and exciting story, satisfied this reader, left me looking for more. Since this only became available most recently, I suppose I'll have to wait for the next installment! A lot of fun!
