Descartes laid the foundation for 17th-century continentalÂ rationalism, later advocated byÂ SpinozaÂ andÂ Leibniz, and was later opposed by theÂ empiricistÂ school of thought consisting ofÂ Hobbes,Â Locke,Â Berkeley, andÂ Hume. Leibniz, Spinoza, and Descartes were all well-versed in mathematics as well as philosophy, and Descartes and Leibniz contributed greatly to science as well. Descartes' influence in mathematics is equally apparent; theÂ Cartesian coordinate systemÂ wasÂ named after him. He is credited as the father ofÂ analytical geometry, the bridge between algebra and geometryâ€”used in the discovery of infinitesimalÂ calculusÂ andÂ analysis. Descartes was also one of the key figures in theÂ Scientific Revolution.
