Old Zeke is crazy… everyone in Apple Grove knows this. But, somehow, it is he who first recognizes that the widow Nanna and her adopted daughter Miriam are in danger. And when he appears at her cottage in the middle of the night squawking like a bird and urging them to follow him to escape dark men on horseback, they know to trust him, even when he leads them into the dark forest that surrounds the village, a forest where no one else dares to go.
