Somewhat infamous for appearing on Broadway in numerous revisions without ever really clicking, Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton's Scarlet Pimpernel is represented in its earliest form in this 1991 concept album. The story, borrowed from the classic Baroness Orczy novel, follows Sir Percy Blakeney, an Englishman who uses his foppish image as a cover for his undercover adventures rescuing people from the guillotine during the French Revolution. He must, however, be careful around his new wife, the French actress Marguerite, whom he doesn't entirely trust. This is the first of three recordings of this score, and it's the most uneven, using its "concept album" status as an opportunity to rather awkwardly mix a variety of styles, from harpsichord-driven "period" pieces to power-pop ballads to a flamenco (?) number. Even with that caveat, it might be the most enjoyable of the three simply because of the presence of pop diva Linda Eder. Wildhorn's wife was along for the many stages of Jekyll & Hyde but sang Pimpernel only on this recording, and her tracks can stand alone as a pretty satisfying pop album: "Home Again," "When I Look at You," "Now When the Rain Falls," "I'll Forget You," "You Are My Home" (with Peabo Bryson), "The Riddle" and "Our Separate Ways" (both with Dave Clemmons), and "There Never Was a Time" (with Chuck Wagner). In addition, listening to Eder wrap her golden vocal cords around that favorite tune of cabaret singers, "Storybook," may itself be worth the price of the CD. --David Horiuchi

I didn't realize this was a show until after reading the reviews and listening to the cd. I saw Linda Eder's name and being a huge fan of hers and thinking I had all her CD's bought it on the spot. Anything with Linda has to be great.
I figured it was a Linda Eder solo CD since it had her name on it and didn't say anything like "cast recording" She wasn't in all the songs but every song in it was good. If Frank Wildhorn and Linda Eder are involved you can't go wrong.
Say what you might about this album and the subsequent stage versions - but the music and lyrics sincerely reflect and move forward the classic tale; its too sad so many of its critics have proven ignorant of the original source (I remember a St Paul critic criticizing the lyrics of a song that were pulled directly from the book as Sir Percy's lyrics for a song....) It has the feel of Romberg's The New Moon, but stands on its own. The best version of all the songs that were put forward during this shows evolution, however, is the last one (Encores). This one, however, has a certain purity of effort that is pleasant - and some dynamic voices.
I love this CD! I purchased it years ago before iPods and mpg players. I actually wore it out and one number skipped in the middle. So I bought this one to download to my phone and computer and still play it on my car stereo. This Concept Album predates the actual Broadway Production and it has fun presenting the songs in a variety of musical styles. It also has songs that were cut or dropped from the score before opening. And they are wonderful!
