I bought this CD being that I am a recent fan of the book. Also this particular album is unique in the fact that they have several songs sung by the orgianal cast as well as the new cast. I think the score by Frank Wildhorn is in some ways more accomplished and engaging than some of his other work. The artists themselves sing with amazing and unrivaled passsion that any miss out on in a recording. I highly recommend this to any fan of musical theater or the book. It is a fresh new way to tell the story.
I bought The Scarlet Pimpernel Encore when the show was at Charlotte, NC, and have been playing it ever since. Not having the other versions to compare it to, I can only say that this one is very enjoyable and certainly anyone who is seeing the show for the first time, as I did, would also enjoy it. Although a long-time Terrence Mann fan, I have to say that Rex Smith's voice was absolutely captivating in "Falcon in the Dive" and "Where's the Girl". The richness of his voice and the emotion with which he sings make these two numbers my favorites on the whole CD. Being a newbie to the show, I also enjoyed Nan Knighton's liner notes. I hope I get another chance to see The Scarlet Pimpernel. The version that came to Charlotte starred William Paul Michals, who was in excellent voice and sexy as all get-out. I also appreciated the inclusion of Margeurite's Dilemma. I don't know if this appeared on the other Pimpernel CD's, but it's a rarity for...
As I sit here listening to Rex Smith sing "Where's the Girl?" I'm having a hard time coming up with something to write for this review because the music is so beautiful that it is distracting me. I've been listening to my Encore cd nonstop since I bought it and it's starting to get worn out... that's how much I listen to it. I'm going to have to buy a new cd. Personally, for "Where's the Girl?" I liked Terrance Mann better but for every other Chau-Chau part I like Rex Smith. Now... the new Marguerite is fabulous... really she is. She gives so much to the song "Storybook". Of course we all know that Douglas Sills is awesome. Do I really have to say anything? He has an amazing voice and it's so cool how he can change from serious at one moment to completely foppish the next. Basically... everything on this cd gives me goosebumps. For all the women I recommend you listen to "Where's the Girl" (reprise also) and "She Was There" on...
