Regarding the perfection of this marvelous story, I will leave that to the numerous wonderful reviews already written. Having said that, one must realize that this particular filmed story line does not follow the book storyline, but it is enchanting nonetheless, with the essence of the novel still intact. I assure anyone both versions are delightful! Understand that you are getting a layman opinion, and not someone who is versed/educated in film language.
But this review regards the improved film transfer of the original film of 1982 to this newer one of 2012, having found this just renewed film recently. The original version was flawed in both audio and video, with some of the whispered dialogue muffled, and some of the scenes quite dark and difficult to see.
This version has increased the visual quality quite a bit, perhaps by about 75%, definitely well enough to see finer detail in scenes previously murky or muddled...
"The Scarlet Pimpernel" is one of my all-time favorite pieces of literature. As such, finding any adaptation electrifies me..and this 1982 adaptation, by far, THE definitive one of them all. From a great and believable cast, to stunning costumes, to a flowing and intriguing plot, this is truly an edition not to miss.
CONTENT ISSUES: Well, honestly, there isn't much to worry about. The only three things worth noting are 1. The very tame and rare use of expletives. 2. The lower-neckline dresses (but it's period wear...you can't do much about that). 3. And that Armand is seen in the same bed twice with his love interest. No they aren't "doing it" on screen...but they do share the same bed.
*Absolutely no plot spoilers*
THE STORY: For me, I typically have high expectations for any adaptation of this tale. You see, on the surface, it is a swashbuckling adventure of espionage. But in reality the tale is a much deeper and...
The best possible movie of the Pimpernel. It celebrates everything good about the story--- the glamor, the adventure, the beautiful heroine, the witty dialogue-- and removes everything obnoxious in the book, notably all anti-Semitism. If you like the Pimpernel story...you will love this movie. If you like period romance, you will eat this movie up like its ice cream. If you like 1980s BBC TV, you will have a blast recognizing actors. I particularly enjoyed seeing a young Julian Fellowes as the Prince Regent! If you like comedy and banter, you will laugh during this movie. If you like Anthony Andrews, you will rewatch this movie repeatedly. If you like the history, you will smile a little at some of the plot twists---but still enjoy.
And if you don't like any of those things, then this movie was never for you anyway.
