When last we encountered Gabriel Allon, the master art restorer and sometime officer of Israeli intelligence, he had just prevailed in his blood-soaked duel with Saudi terrorist financier Zizi al-Bakari. Now Gabriel is summoned once more by his masters to undertake what appears to be a routine assignment: travel to Amsterdam to purge the archives of a murdered Dutch terrorism analyst who also happened to be an asset of Israeli intelligence. But once in Amsterdam, Gabriel soon discovers a conspiracy of terror festering in the city’s Islamic underground, a plot that is about to explode on the other side of the English Channel, in the middle of London.
The target of this plot is Elizabeth Halton, the daughter of the American ambassador to the Court of St. James’s, who is to be brutally kidnapped. Gabriel arrives seconds too late to save her. And by revealing his face to the plot’s masterminds, his fate is sealed as well. Drawn once more into the service of American intelligence, Gabriel hurls himself into a desperate search for the missing woman as the clock ticks steadily toward the hour of her execution. It will take him from Amsterdam to Germany to the very end of Denmark. It will thrust him into an unlikely alliance with a man who has lost everything because of his devotion to Islam. It will cause him to question the morality of the tactics of his trade. And it might very well cost him his life.

Secret Servant must have been written by someone other than Daniel Silva. It just did not have the same detailed pursuit of intelligence about the "bad guys". It became boring very early on. It impressed me as if the author got tired and compressed everything after the first 100 pages. I have read ten of Silva's books and very much enjoyed all except this one. I am glad Secret Servant was not my first Silva book - it would have been my last.
All of the Gabriel Allon books give you a good mystery and and a fair amount of art history in each book. On the positive side Daniel Silva, is a good writer with great sources; on the negative side whole passages and parragraphs are lifted from one book to the next. Every description of either Gabriel Allon, is the same word for word in every book as is the basic write up of his team and evry mention of King Saul Boulevard. If I had tried doing that in either high school or college evey teacher would have circled the phrases and sent it back for either more description or to be reworked completely.
Detailed and telegraphic style - rapid and artistic creation and description of characters. International tourism as his characters travel the world. Thoughtful presentation of the challenges faced by security services in various countries. You'll want to read the entire series of these novels. Excellent for airplane books, overnights, waiting in lines, train travel, or just sitting outside contemplating how thankful you should be not to be involved in Silva's plausible mayhem.
