When you run out of the real thing, this is a fun way to be able to experience (and enjoy) a few more of the type of mystery puzzles which most Sherlock Holmes short stories essentially are. The stories in this collection are relatively new (meaning "recently-written" rather than the old pulp classics contained in many other Megapacks); they are also short and conventional. All but a few follow the comfortable and familiar, tried-and-true formula of having Dr. Watson serve as narrator; the 3 or so stories which deviate from this formula (one being told by Professor Moriarty, for example) are not, in my opinion, as satisfying. Furthermore, there are certain, equally-familiar ingredients of plot, character, and setting which one expects to find in Sherlock Holmes stories; pack too many such elements in any one story and it will seem exaggerated and parodic and won't ring true, but provide too few and the story won't have the right period feel. These stories (apart from the... Read more
These were Sherlock Holmes stories written by authors other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but most stayed true to the style. One of them is a sci-fi story that takes Sherlock into the future to solve the greatest mystery ever posed, where are the aliens? If you've read all Doyle's stories, and you long for more, these will scratch that itch. At first I had trouble with the Kindle version loading on my Kindle. I wasn't having trouble with any other files loading, so I'm not sure. I went through help and all their instructions to no avail, taking all their measure to fix it. A few days later, suddenly it worked. Not sure what that was about. I only tell you that in case anyone else has a problem. I enjoyed the stories and will explore some more writings of the authors that were included. ~ Review by Sandy Penny, Founder of SweetMysteryBooks.com
I always wonder at how good these multi-story volumes are going to be. Sometimes you get a few really good stories and the rest are stinkers, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed the whole megapack. Now there were a few stories that really stretched the area of good common sense and reality, but as Johnny Carson used to say if you can believe the premise then the rest of the show can be successful. In one story Sherlock Holmes is whisked several hundred years in the future and in another he dies at the falls with Moriarity and ends up in heaven to solve a problem for St. Peter. Give me a break. Even though a few of the stories were a stretch to the imagination, when I was done I found that I enjoyed the stories anyway. Isn't that why we read; for enjoyment. So even the ridiculous can serve to entertain us. The majority of the stories are very good, believable and enjoyable and I would recommend it for a nice evening read.
