Additional Information

Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil.

Sal seems to appear out of nowhere - a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he's welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he's a runaway from a nearby farm town.

When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperatures as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestles with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.

Sometimes the things we believe we hear are really just our own shifting needs.

The Summer that Melted Everything is what To Kill a Mockingbird would be if it was written as a work of magical realism/allegory. I am always drawn to "controversial" books, and in most instances most of my GR friends have either loved/hated this debut novel. I realize that it's not perfect, there were too many things going on at once and sometimes the sentences were incredibly beautiful, but had no real meaning, but overall I loved it. I cherished the poetic writing, the imaginative descriptions, the idea behind the story and the feelings evoked in me. For me this story is about our expectations of things - what do we expect evil to look like, what expectations do we have of the people we love, and of ourselves - and what happens when these don't align to reality. This is a very dark and upsetting novel, but for me it was definitely worth it - I got lost in the writing, felt for the... Read more
Autopsy Bliss, as disheartened attorney, during the beginning of one long hot summer puts an ad in the paper inviting the devil to come visit his town of Breathed, Ohio. When a 13 year old boys answers his ad, it forever changes the lives of Autopsy and his family. I like a book that has a happy ending, everything wrapped up in a bow. This book doesn't meet that definition. However this book drew me in, kept me guessing how did Sal know so much, where did he come from? The answer both was shocking and heartbreaking, with an unexpected twist at the end.
Not the sort of book I normally read and at first, I was put off by the strange story line. I stuck with it and I am glad I did. This is one powerful and gripping novel that I could not put down. Its depiction of the very worst and very best of human behavior rings true. If you like books with a sunny outlook, this won't be one, but read it anyway. For a first novel, this is a stunner. For a fifteenth novel, it is a stunner! Just plain brilliant!
