The Surgeon
Before you launch into this novel, a word of warning is in order. Some people will find the theme of this book disquieting. It revolves around people who have healthy limbs removed voluntarily!
It has only been in the last few years that devotism, the attraction to amputees, has come out of the closet. It is estimated that as many as one in ever 500 people possesses this attraction to some degree. The issues that go with being a devotee are well known, as is the hostility with which these people are treated by certain factions of the disabled community.
However, the issues surrounding devotees pale in comparison to the issues that cloud the desires of a related sub-group. These people, known as want-to-bes (or wantabes) are identified by their deep-rooted desire to become amputees. Medical and psychological research is just beginning for this group.
The insightful "Overground" website has an article entitled "What should we do about the Wantabes?" It's conclusions are simple: It would not impact society to grant these people their wish, and it would improve their lives, at least emotionally, by making them happy.
What follows is, as "Twilight Zone" host Rod Serling would have said, "submitted for your consideration."
