Additional Information

"The most provocative and useful book I’ve read in years." —Robert Sutton, New York Times bestselling author of The No Asshole Rule

How do we turn off the noise of daily life, turn on our brains, and begin to engage in that fundamental human activity known as thinking again?  P.M. Forni, America's civility expert has given some thought to how we can successfully think our way through a greatly distracting world and live a better life. In The Thinking Life, he looks at the importance of thinking: how we do it, why we don't do it enough and why we need to do more of it. In twelve short chapters, he gives readers a remedy for the Age of Distraction, an age fuelled by social networking overload, compulsive texting and an omnipresent stream of cellphone calls. He shows how to put aside time each day to improve:

  • Attention
  • Introspection
  • Self-control
  • Positive thinking
  • Proactive thinking
  • Decision making
  • Creative thinking
  • Problem solving

Just as Forni did with civility, he puts the importance of good thinking front and center in a book as lucid and profound as his earlier works.

Although it was enjoyable as a quick read, this was not the book that I expected. Reviewer comments with words like "most provocative," "eloquent," and the author's emphasis on "serious thinking" and early references to philosophers led me to believe that the book would offer more substance than I found.

Rather than an in-depth discussion of why thinking is important and how to do it well, the book is more like a series of brief essays with a number of useful tips such as not checking email all the time and trying to frame things in a positive way. These pieces were fun to read and had some good information, particularly for people who have not read the authors that Forni cites in the very minimal endnotes, such as Martin Seligman, Steven Covey, Scott Peck, and others not listed in the endnotes, including Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Daniel Kahneman who have written about thinking.

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to teens and twenty somethings. It's a handbook on how to live a good and decent life, and I loved it. There's some excellent advice here, told in an inspiring and non-threatening way by a college professor who works with young adults. Kids who don't want to hear this kind of thing from their parents might really be helped at the beginning of their adult lives by reading and taking to heart the message here - learn to think in an unselfish manner and live not just for yourself.
Good book, very interesting to discuss in a classroom setting which is why I purchased it. Nothing particular exciting but I did enjoy reading it. Book came on time and in great condition.
