I'd been curious about this story for a while, so finally bought and read it. I liked the beginning and ending the best, but found the middle portion tedious. The premise was intriguing to begin, but then King took it into his typical depiction of various people going crazy, with violent and gross results. That is something the author often does, and sometimes it works better than other times. In this book, I didn't care for it. He used that tactic very well in The Stand and in Salem's Lot, but in this book I found the little sub-plots around the townsfolk to be dull. So, I give it 3 stars.
I have to agree with others who have mentioned the book has a very slow (and, I might add, utterly uninteresting) beginning. Once the story got going, I became more engrossed with King's literary prowess. That said, I felt the Epilogue was also very uninspired and disappointing - like some sort of unwelcome appendage to the story. It felt as though King knew that there were many loose ends that needed some sort of hasty resolution, but gave very little thought or effort as to how they would be drawn to a close in a manner reasonable for the reader to accept. Overall, not what I was expecting from such a revered author.
A tense read. King shows why he is the master of horror. Though it may not be a book he liked it was a thrilling read. No worries with this book hell I even dreamt about this book. Essential reading for king fan's. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book to all fan's of modern horror.
