Additional Information

They were the men and women of the Royal Navy's Special Operations units. Carrying out lightning raids on hostile coasts, they became a navy within a navy―each handpicked for their individual skills, and all of them courageous. Against the mighty backdrop of World War II they performed their small but deadly operations―living often beyond hope, sometimes beyond mercy. This is the dramatic story of a handful of such people. The Volunteers.

I am amazed at the quality of the writing of Reeman at this stage of his life. I have read all of his contemporary naval stories and most of his Alexander Kent series. He is an extraordinary story teller and his research and naval lore and history are exhaustive. He served as a youthful officer in MGBs in the Channel during the war, and after all of these years his writing is lucid and engaging.
Reeman does it again, with a riveting action adventure WW II story. This time he stages the action with a special boat operations section --meant to be SBS though not so titled I suspect-- and follows three volunteers thorough a series of adventures concentrated upon coastal forces. Well done, and with his trademark authenticity; the story is as informative as it is exciting. Good pairing with Dudley Pope's "Flag Five" --a factual history of coastal forces in the Mediterranean and Adriatic during the war.
This was a successful attempt to tell a story. What one could tell is that this author served on
one of these babies. Dangerous work surely. But one hell of a ride.
