What a great read! Beth Lewis has spun a chilling yarn, a quasi-western survival tale with horror elements. Protagonist Elka has been raised in the forest by Trapper, a man that she finds, after a shocking revelation, she no longer knows. Elka's life is as ruined as the post-apocalyptic British Columbian landscape that she journeys across, and she must piece together the shattered pieces of her life and memory in order to see the true depth of Trapper's deeds - and her own. Told in Elka's salty, no-nonsense patter, we are enveloped in her world completely. I felt like I, too, was raised in the forest with all the attendant skills to make a living there. I, too, was mortally afraid of the terrifying thunderhead storms that would rend wood and stone and destroy anything in their way. I, too, was devastated by the many challenges set before Elka, and like Elka, I, too, bounced back and persevered. Usually I read sci-fi/horror/fantasy, and this book was a wonderful departure...
Firstly, this was a difficult book to read, as the author chose to write it totally in a slang of the uneducated. To the end my brain would not allow me so absorb one slang term for the actual 2 letter word it means. However, it really is quite the story of a redemption of sorts for 2 young girls whose struggles brought them to become the best of friends. Living was very tough for these two who really are well suited to become friends and help each other enormously in the story. The thing I learned is that I'm very glad I've had a home and "people" my whole life. I really really admire the author for her writing, and not stepping out of the slang once that I noticed. And I admire the terrific story of Elka's growth even though some of the reading was sometimes unpleasant. It is a terrific story I can recommend.
The wolf road is a great roller coaster thriller. The main character of Elka is a sinewy, gritty raw young girl just trying to survive with her knowledge and wits. She is fleeing from a dark past which the plot carefully unravels and the path twists and turns and darkens with no hesitation until the end. The reader grows to love Elka so much that despite her feral nature and bizarre past you are captivated. Definitely a refreshing, dark thriller with a fantastic and frightening plot with terrific character development.
