- Symptoms. Does your bath mixer or shower valve no longer regulate the temperature effectively, or does the flow rate become low? Do you have a strange "gushing" or vibrating sound? Are you in an area with hard water like 60-65% of the UK? The solution. Simply replace the spool, not the whole tap or shower!
- Specifications and features. Made mainly from brass, this common thermostatic spool is available from many manufacturers and some of the types of taps and showers we sell are shown in the image gallery above. The operating temperature range is between 20 and 48 degrees Celsius with a safety override button at 38 degrees Celsius. The cartridge is calibrated for 38 degrees Celsius. The required/recommended water pressure for operation is between 0.5 bar and 5 bar. The maximum imbalance between hot and cold must not exceed 5:1. Subject to these necessary water pressures, it can be used with most systems.
- To fit it to a bath mixer tap or torpedo bar shower valve, all you have to do is remove the locating screw (not supplied) under the valve body (usually a 3mm Allen key is required), pull out the existing spool together with the handle and replace the handle onto the new spool and push it into place. For concealed shower valves, the handle may need to be removed and the spool fitted separately. Lubrication may be required around the black rubber seal. Always make sure the water is turned off when installing! It can also be used to replace some older style spools
- Dimensions are. Total length of the cartridge = approx. 93.7 mm (including the spindle and copper capsule at the other end). Widest part = 33.8 mm diameter (around the thicker brass part where the positioning screw hole is located). Bottom of the box to the centre of the screw hole = 60 mm 3 black rubber washers located approx. 7mm, 27mm and 47mm from the centre of the locating screw hole The spindle has 24 splines (teeth) with a diameter of approx. 9.6 mm.
