Additional Information

Life has never been easy for the three Campbell sisters. Jess, Courtney, and Dani live on a remote ranch in Western Canada where they work hard and try to stay out of the way of their father's temper. One night, a fight gets out of hand and the sisters are forced to go on the run, only to get caught in an even worse nightmare when their truck breaks down in a small town. As events spiral out of control they find themselves in a horrifying situation and are left with no choice but to change their names and create new lives.

Eighteen years later, they are still trying to forget what happened that summer. But when one of the sisters goes missing, followed closely by her niece, they are pulled back into the past. And this time there's nowhere left to run.

With Those Girls Chevy Stevens presents her most visceral thriller yet: an unforgettable portrait of desperation, loyalty, and evil. A story of survival...and revenge.

As others have written in their reviews, the book starts out great and makes the reader anxious to see what happens to these girls. However, once it gets to part two, it goes down hill from there. Possible spoiler alert....once part two began with the voice of Jess's daughter, the writing became unbelievable in both tone and content. I was frustrated because it seemed like not one of the three girls had learned anything from their experience. They were still gullible. Especially the daughter of Jess. She was written as incredibly stupid and naive. She did not make me root for her or Crystal in the least because they were both too stupid to keep themselves out of a dangerous situation. And then it seemed like the girls were 'leery' of carrying a gun - leading me to believe the author is on the side of the 'anti-gun' aisle. If what happened to them had happened to me, I would have a gun with me at all times. Would never go anywhere again without one within reach. Anyway, I would not... Read more
Those Girls is an often gruesome story of unimaginable violence and abuse. While such scenes can often be gratuitous, this is far from it. Throughout the story is a portrait of 3 girls/young women who have learned to endure and survive such abuse throughout their lives. The book, as would be predicted, ends with redemption and salvation.

Stevens writing style leaves no detail to chance; the reader is instantly drawn to the characters, events, and locations. The settings are well described so that the reader can "be there" in the moment. Dialog is realistic and neither contrived nor stilted.

This genre and this book in particular is not for everyone. Although it reads fairly fast, I found myself taking emotional breaks every few chapters. As such, it is not the sort of book I'd bring to the beach or as a diversion for an airplane ride. However, if you are looking for a story with the themes of desperation/salvation and can tolerate the brutality,... Read more
Those Girls are three sisters growing up pretty much on their own after the death of their Mom. Dad who is absent most of the time, ostensibly working out of town. On the rare occasions that he's home, he is drunk and abusive. After a particularly bad go round, they are on the run when Dad ends up dead.
These sisters are fierce as only those who have been in abusive/negligent families can be. They are survivors. But they are still children with some of their hopes, dreams and naivete still intact. And it is this that is their salvation and at times their downfall.
I was immediately engaged with all three girls, rooting for them, shocked by them and shed some tears for them. Some may say the scenarios they found themselves in were unrealistic, too cliche or pat. But after 41 years of nursing, I am still shocked at the variety of havoc humans can wreak on one another and particularly on the most vulnerable, our children.
This was a terrific read start to finish. Can't say I'm... Read more
