    I assign many activities from this book to my clients. What one client (an avid reader of self-help books) liked best about this book were the examples of how to complete the assignments. My clients find it easy to read, understand and use. I was using the first edition of the book (required reading in grad school for my CBT class)until my client bought the fourth edition and we compared editions. The fourth edition has some excellent updates so I immediately purchased it also. I would highly recommend this to clinicians for use in practice and anyone else needing to get their thoughts and feelings under control.
    This book is not a substitute for professional help if you have serious issues, but if it's some modest thing like the occasional panic attack or obsessive thoughts at 3 AM, you don't have to spend ages analyzing where it came from, you just look up the symptoms in the book and do the assigned exercises. We found it helped immediately. Simple, fast, effective, and a lot cheaper than a therapist. You don't even have to read the whole book. There's a table that shows you which chapters are relevant to whatever you want to work on. But while you're at it, read Mindsight by Daniel Siegel.
    I have referred back to this book many times over the years and I've recommended it to others. I appreciate its non-sentimentality and logical methodology. The authors focus on practical techniques to relieve suffering. There are skills here anyone can use in therapy or not. I especially recommend it to men who are nervous about self-help books. It is compassionate but not overly emotional. It treats unwholesome thought patterns as a problem to be solved with a step-by-step process.
