Arguably more so than in any genre, the rhythm section is the heart and soul of reggae. Coherently it forcefully pushes the music forward, always with the characteristic, steady beat of the drums at the very forefront.
The Reggae EZX takes the traditional sound and recording techniques of reggae drums and puts it in the powerful framework of today's most intuitive tool for drum production, EZdrummer 2.
The Reggae EZX was recorded at Rub-a-Dub Studios in Stockholm, Sweden and comes with a unique and genuine collection of instruments, all handpicked for this session. It includes two full, single-headed custom drum kits, a generous selection of snares, percussion and traditional Binghi and clay hand drums.
Everything was recorded using vintage gear and microphones, the custom miking techniques of the genre and through a 1970s Soundcraft Series II console. All this coupled with the studio's dense, organic wood-lined walls, its tight space and three decades worth of reggae history will give you unrivaled authenticity in drums for roots oriented music. Saturated, warm and rich tones that will fall seamlessly into any track you're working on.

I didn't buy this from Amazon but thought I'd give a review anyway; as I wished there had been some reviews out there before I purchased. I'm a massive fan of ezdrummer and the ezdrummer2 upgrade. I have many of the midi packs and add ons and have been waiting for a reggae pack for ages. So, I purchased the EZX Expansion pack and Midi pack thinking I would finally get some great sounding beats. Oh my God, how utterly disappointed I was when I opened up the programmes. There are not many variations and most that are there are very lame and hardly dynamic. When compared to the other EZX expansion packs this is exceedingly bad value for money and being led to purchase the additional content of the Midi pack just feels like you've been totally ripped off, as they should have included that in the Expansion pack. Sadly not a good purchase from an otherwise normally excellent company.
This is a bit of a bummer. I have used EZ Drummer since it was created and have a couple of the expansion packs. When I heard the Reggae EZX was being released, I got really excited because my main genre on music is reggae. But I have to say, this was pretty disappointing. There are only a few different patterns, and not many choices of variations. Hopefully they release some updates in the future.
Let me preface this review by stating that I own all the SDX packs excepts for the most recent "Indie" (soon enough, though) and have nothing but high praise for the software and the kits. I also own a good number of MIDI packs and they range from serviceable to solid with the occasional let down.
Having been born and raised in Miami I grew up being exposed to reggae and other musics from the Caribbean Island and this just doesn't cut it. Toontrack have in the past traveled to various studios and employed appropriate drummers for their production sessions. The most obvious one is the Funk Masters EZX with Clyde Stubblefield and John Starks playing the session. It's an excellent example of how to produce such an expansion pack and that example should have been followed in this instance. It wasn't.
Next time, they need to hire a Kirk Bennett, Carlton Davis, or Leroy Wallace.
