Two romances for the price of one. Tough Dodge Hanley, P.I. goes to Texas to help his daughter out of jam. However, he hasn't laid eyes on his daughter since he saw her in the hospital after she was born. He finally meets up with Carolyn King, the one who got away, and the mother of his daughter. His daughter is now 30 years old, and at first doesn't know he is her father. Lots of suspense and action. But for some reason, the beginning chapters had me confused. I kept mixing up the characters. It took me awhile to get into it, and several chapters before I could keep the characters straight. The daughter, Berry, and deputy Ski eventually hook up, as well as Dodge and his lost love.
There is a twist at the end, but I won't reveal so I don't spoil it. I did enjoy this book, as I do most of Sandra Brown's novels.
Another thrilling novel by Sandra Brown that will hold your interest from beginning to end, especially when she brings back some infamous characters from "Smash-Cut". When former ex-cop and private investigator Dodge Hanley receives a phone call in the middle of the night, he's livid to be woken up at all. Except when he heard the voice on the other end of the line, he couldn't move a muscle and found it hard to talk at all. For that person was Caroline, a long-lost love that he hasn't seen or spoken to in thirty years. She asks if he can come to Texas immediately for their daughter Berry is in trouble and she needs him and his expertise. He keeps telling himself no but the truth is, he has never stopped loving Caroline, or the daughter he left behind all those years before. His analysis is once he gets there, he'll do what he can and than fly right back to Atlanta or so he thought. But one look at Caroline and the daughter he never knew, made up his mind for him. She...
I generally liked the story but I was left with unanswered questions, such as 'What was Ski's real name?' and 'Why did Caroline wait THIRTY years before contacting Dodge?'
I found it odd that while Ski admitted that his was a nickname (something that wasn't clear from the beginning), readers never find out his actual first name. It does not seem as if he and Berry ever have that conversation either.
Also, why does it take Berry's messy situation for Caroline to call Dodge after 30 years? She has never seen it fit to call him for ANY other reason, so it seems implausible that she bothers to call him now. Is it that her trusty, dependable husband has died and she feels helpless and lonely? This does not mesh with the description of Caroline as strong and independent at all.
Unfortunately, the lead male and female characters in Brown's books (in this case Berry and Ski, not Caroline and Dodge) often seem too much like her lead characters in other...
