Additional Information

This is a cradle-to-grave biography of Mickey Walker, former welterweight (1922–1926) and middleweight champion (1926–1931) of the world, one of the greatest fighters in ring history. He fought at a time when boxing was a major sport with only eight championships, and he held two of them over a nine-year period. He fought at a time when each weight division was jammed with good fighters, and he fought them all from welterweight up to heavyweight, frequently being outweighed 20 to 30 pounds.
Walker was also a great personality who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was married seven times to four different women, and he cavorted with movie stars and mobsters. When his boxing career ended in 1935, Walker ran saloons in various locations and eventually became an artist of some standing. He died in 1981 at age 79.

I bought this for my dad whose step-father Ace Hudkins is featured in one of the chapters. He liked the book very much and I enjoyed reading about my grandfather who I remember as a sweet & gentle old man :)
Coming in at just over 200 pages, Brit John Jarrett's bio of American boxer Mickey Walker (b.1901, pro career 1919-35, welterweight [147 lb] champion 1922-26, middleweight [160 lb] champ 1926-29, 94 W, 19 L, 4 D, 60 KO, 45 ND, d. 1981, hgt 5' 7", reach 67") is a solid offering that packs plenty of info despite its small size, just as the "Toy Bulldog" packed quite a wallop despite being the only welterweight king to go on to become a legitimate contender for the heavyweight title. Although not as in depth as, say, Stephen Compton's Live Fast, Die Young the Life and Times of Harry Greb, TOY BULLDOG provides all the necessary info about its boxer subject, such as his upbringing, detailed accounts of his more important bouts, his life after he retired from the ring, etc, and is also scattered with brief sketches of his famous/more able opponents and interesting...
