Description

In 2015, Phil Brotherton made a 3,500 mile long journey of remembrance, by bike and on foot, to commemorate the centenary of World War One.

Starting in Turkey, in April and armed with 2015 paper poppies to be left along his route, he travelled to Gallipoli and followed the front lines and trenches across 11 more countries: Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Belgium before finally pedalling home to West Yorkshire in England.

Here, he recounts the triumphs and frustrations of his arduous 3 month journey, while exploring century old battlefields, cemeteries and memorials: from hearing wolves in the wild for the first time, successfully hunting for his supper and overcoming whatever the Turkish version of "Delhi Belly" is, to dealing with packs of feral dogs, having his gear stolen and completely running out of food and money.

Tinged with sadness but often peppered with moments of humour, Trail of Poppies is the story of one man's commitment to honour the millions of soldiers who lost their lives, on both sides, in the 'Great War'.
