Additional Information

"A civilization is ready to re-awaken. But it cannot do so by itself. Two generations ago, a star-spanning society annihilated itself in a furious war. The final weapon in this war was a new form of life -- a malevolent electronic race that hates life itself. But among the ruins, life is stirring -- a civilization is waiting to be rebuilt."

In my opinion, TNE, was a victim of the times in which it was written. It is transparent that many Traveller players of 1993 wanted a new iteration of the simpler, more predictable rule set of Classic Traveller (1977). After years of playing games in the Rebellion milieu of MegaTraveller, many Traveller players simply wanted the old game back. Instead, what they got was Frank Chadwick's crowning achievement. Chadwick has yet to write a better gaming system(compare this to his wonderful Space:1889 game). Now, in 2009, it is clear why TNE never became wildly popular as other versions of Traveller did (i.e. MegaTraveller, T4, GURPS, Mongoose and T5). The classic milieu returned in 1996 with T4 and so did the old players of the original game. So it seems that no matter how well Chadwick did with this work, it was destined to upopularity.

Taken at face value, the game is an outstanding example of how to create a good rpg. Character and world generation are done the same way... Read more
This book is a refreshing return to the fascinating world that was Classic Traveller. It represents Miller's latest effort to bring his own product into its purest form. All other writers of Traveller books and adventures have been written by one-time freelancers (i.e. Fugate, Chadwick, Wiseman, Paul Drye and many others). The fact is that Traveller needs to be written by one steady team of writers to avoid confusion and lack of compatibility. Miller is the only one who can truly do this and this book is the evidence of that. Interestingly enough, T4 is still considered a very active version of Traveller ad the game books are still affordable. I highly recommend this book to beginners and experienced players alike. It represents one solid system of gaming that makes SF role-playing what it is today.
As the first reviewer has also remarked ~ this variant of Traveller New Era RPG just never got much momentum going ~ maybe due to the stormy times [for the New Era GDW RPG maker folks and for RPGs in general] ~ and maybe due to this variant being viewed with wide hostility from folks expecting the *Big Old Grand Imperium As Usual*. I was on the fence at first due to some nostalgia for that ~ and for a matching discomfort with *Dark Gothic Graphic Chaos* ~ via regicidal assasination and thereby destruction of the Third Imperium ~ when aided by [cyber AI] VIRUS disrupting communtication in general ~ leading to *chaotic* fragmentation to a greater or lesser degree everywhere [after the Empress Wave has also hit] ~ for a *Terrible Triple Storm*.

So, I was suspicious of what [at first] seemed [merely] dark gothic graphic chaotic reaction to the grand classic Traveller Third Imperium. However, upon closer inspection, I can see that the VARIETY of newly created space regions... Read more
