Additional Information

The new National Geographic Treasury of Egyptian Mythology is a stunning tableau of Egyptian myths, including those of pharaohs, queens, the boisterous Sun God Ra, and legendary creatures like the Sphinx. The lyrical storytelling of award-winning author Donna Jo Napoli dramatizes the timeless tales of ancient Egypt in the year when Angelina Jolie will make Cleopatra a multimedia star. And just like the popular National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology, the stories in this book will be beautifully illustrated to bring ancient characters vividly to life.

The stories are embellished with sidebars that provide historical, cultural, and geographic context and a mapping feature that adds to the fun and fascination. Resource notes and ample back matter direct readers to discover more about ancient Egypt. With its attractive design and beautiful narrative, this accessible treasury stands out from all other mythology titles in the marketplace.

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The only thing that saves this book is the colorful art. Other than that, It gets Egyptian mythology constantly wrong. I love how they replace Set with Thoth in one tale because Set is supposed to be our devil figure, then it calls Set a liar for claiming he protects Ra. Archeological proof has never shown Thoth fighting Apep, always Set or Bastet. Our Education these days, folks. Teaching children to think in black and white, regardless of well known evidence. (Yes, I understand Egyptian mythology can be contradictory, but that doesn't mean we should make stuff up when we are trying to be educational.)
Beautiful book on the Mythology of Egypt, got it for my grandson and he loves it. The art work is captivating, the stories grab the kids attention.
