Additional Information

Like gardeners everywhere, gardeners in the Southwest want home landscapes that include lush, thriving trees and shrubs. But contending with difficult soils, three-digit summer temperatures, and minimal rainfall can pose a daunting challenge. To add to the dilemma, many plants that prosper in other parts of the country can't be grown in the Southwest without resorting to wasteful artificial irrigation.

The solution to this conundrum is choosing plants that are adapted to the rigors of the southwestern climate. In Trees and Shrubs for the Southwest, readers will find profiles of more than 200 of the most attractive, easy-to-grow, and climate appropriate trees and shrubs. Mary Irish also provides expert information about how to use trees and shrubs in the garden, how to plant and care for them, and how to combat common pests and diseases. This comprehensive title also includes clear and concise instructions on common tasks such as planting, staking, and pruning. From feathery-leaved acacias to bright-flowered desert willows, tough-as-nails mesquites to silvery Texas rangers, homeowners who want to create an attractive, sustainable landscape will find no better resource.

Mary's books are invaluable for the information they provide for plants adapted to the Low Desert, and this one is no exception. She's writing about trees this time, and what a compendium this is. She also includes information about desert-adapted palm trees and large shrubs (many of these can be grown as small trees). Her style is graceful and concise, with short paragraphs easy to peruse, and information such as cold tolerance easy to find. Her husband Gary's fine photographs are given a larger format by the publisher, showing even better visual information about the form of the plant. This volume is a great way to complete her series of books about Low Desert-Adapted plants, and one more book to put in a prominent place on the bookshelf, easy to pull out and refer to for a quick reference or to answer a question (yours or your neighbor's!). Use these plant profiles to help select the trees/large shrubs to plant in your gardens, and success will be yours!
Good survey of trees & shrubs that will grow in the Southwest; being from upstate NY, it will be very helpful in my intended new gardening activities. Good pics as well as the informative text.
I checked out this book from our local library and I can't bring myself to give it back yet. I've renewed it three times! I really just ought to buy it. I'm sure it would be a great addition to my library. My only disappointment is some of the pictures aren't detailed enough for identification purposes. But I still give it five stars.
