Most Helpful Customer Reviews

This performance is likely the slowest version of Kreisleriana on disc--well over 40 minutes. Leave it to Barto to go where interpreters like Horowitz had already hinted--a place where colors and nuance inherent in this score go far deeper than many interpreters would dare take it. While most performers of the 30's and 40's played this score at an almost blazing pace (witness the wild Cortot version of the 30's and the fast but clean Hofmann performance of the same period), Horowitz took his time, and Barto certainly follows that lead. If your taste is to explore the complex romantic impetus of Schumann from the inside of the score, to see what corridors to the psyche this fabulous piece might yet open, seek out this recording by Tzimon Barto. (Note: the Symphonic Etudes, a specialty of Barto and his teacher, Adele Marcus, accompany the Kreisleriana on this disc, and they are also quite fine.)
