Burned for 9 hrs and 12 minutes in the UCO candle lantern. The one candle I burned did, that is. The rest are reserved for the BOB/WTSHTF. The citronella smells great!!
***UPDATE*** I took an impromptu camping trip, mid-November in Wisconsin. My tent has reached the end of it's life, so I slept in the van. It got down to 23f Friday night, burning the ECO lantern + body heat kept the van at 38. I burned 2 candles, fri and sat night. Friday's burned over 11 hours. Saturday's (not as cold, 40f - I did not monitor the temp inside the van that night) burned almost as long! I don't see how, but I wonder if they burn longer in colder temperatures. The one noted above that burned for 9'12" was burned inside the house at about 72f. I also noticed much less Citronella smell in the cold weather, but can't say I care. In my experience nothing really keeps the bugs away better than gold old fashioned cancer causing chemical sprays.
First: Yes, they are really very expensive for candles.
These fit into UCO (or similar) breakdown candle lanterns. The lanterns usually come with paraffin candles, which are great and last a long time. These replacement candles are made from beeswax, however. They do last considerably longer than the paraffin versions. What I really like about them, however, is that they give off a really pleasing, mild scent as they burn. I use these when I'm illuminating the inside of my tent or cabin rather than the other ones. I also appreciate that they are a natural resource.
The quality is high, and they burn very evenly and as long as advertised. My experience is that the wicks on these have been self-trimming and have never broken off between uses. These seem to have held up well in the hot environments of the desert, my enclosed gear box, and the interior of my truck, never melting to the point of being misshapen.
These UCO specialty candles are the only ones made to fit UCO's proprietary design 'Original Candle Lantern'. They are becoming harder to find and also more expensive now that the USA's largest retail chain that begins with "Wal-" has stopped carrying them (and discontinued the UCO lanterns also, so they won't be back). I'm giving them 4 stars because of their rising price and because they're also becoming harder to find (vicious circle). You can supposedly also use less expensive 'plumber's candles' in the UCO lantern; they are the right width at 1.25" but need to be shortened a little to fit; personally I can't find them locally so I can't confirm. UCO's newer lanterns (Mini and Micro) both use tea lights instead of these candles, a smart move. You can also burn a tea light in the Original Lantern, just leave the candle out and place a tea light on top of the aluminum candle-cover insert (lots of online videos on UCO lantern mods). The Mini is a great design, the...
