For years, the failing news magazine U.S. News has sold the American public the idea that colleges and universities can be ranked from #1 into the hundreds. That this is utter nonsense is apparent to anyone who actually thinks about it a little. That most people don't really seem to have thought much about it at all is a shame. It means they are buying into what is essentially a sham. Why don't we rank the best foods? The best cities? The best cars? The best shoes? Our response to such silliness (and ranking lists are an American favorite), has to be "according to who? By what criteria?" We ought to do this with the U.S. News colleges lists, too, of course but most people don't seem to. Not mentioned is that Williams spends a fortune mailing fancy brochures to thousands of high school students inviting them to apply... with the goal of increasing the number that will be rejected, thereby boosting William's selectivity rate.

The "Best" college is the one that is most fitted to the goals of an individual student. The best guides to colleges do not attempt to rank colleges , instead they provide information to find the ideal college match.

The top three guides are Tanabe, Fiske and Pope. But, the College Board website provides... Read more
It's quite good for one that wants to get an overview on some of the country's best universities.
It also contains a few tops and rankings that might help a high school student in search of good universities.
