I like the Spark Wheel. It's really made for two hand use and it's tiny, 4cm in height. The instruction says you can use it with one hand but you'll have to find a hard surface to run the circular head section on in order to use it with one hand. However, it's really meant for two hand use.

Refer to my attached image. The three extra flints that this product comes with is compared to a package of one of the 100 flints I bought on (btw, the 100 flints are the same size as the extras that comes with this product. The quality of the 100 flints are the same).

I have made over 120 sparks with the Spark Wheel and the flint is 1/2 used. I believe you can get @ 200 sparks on one flint.

The sparks you get from the Spark Wheel is similar to the sparks you would get from a BIC lighter.

Note: this is not a magnesium fire starter. Look up the difference before you purchase.
This is a great little addition to your backpacking gear if you use a stove. I've gotten into light (not quite ultralight) packing because the light (25-30 lbs with food and water) packs don't beat you down the way the old 40-55lb ones do. One problem I've always had is a good way to light my stove. I've tried cigarette lighters from cheap Bics to fancy wind-resistant things and the piezo-electric type sparkers. They all seem to give out within a few days of use (I'm sure there's a fine lighter out there that will do the trick but I haven't found it). I've always ended up back with matches, which are fine but sometimes fussy, especially if it's wet or they're older. I tried this sparker because it looked small and light and it was cheap (currently $4). All it is is a nicely machined, sturdy brass tube with a spring-loaded flint, sparking wheel, and tensioning screw. It throws a spark maybe 1.5 to 2 inches long, with a good flick of the wheel. It about 2 inches long and weighs... Read more
I bought these for Boy Scout primitive fire contest. Believe it or not, we got better sparks off a flint and steel, and more reliable sparks off of a ferro rod. The Boy Scouts rated this as their least popular firestarter. In time to get a fire started, it finished behind an aluminum soda can.

I bought two of them, used by two separate teams. I also tried it before the competition. The sparks I got from it were smaller than the ones off a disassembled disposable cigarette lighter. In use, the wheels jammed on both of them almost immediately. When we did get them working, no one (including me) could light charcloth from these.

I kept everything else we used that day from the competition, but I tried to give these away. No boys wanted them. They went in the trash where they belonged.
